So, my friend, Amie''s daughter, Sarah has a baby doll. Nothing fancy, just your standard run of the mill baby with no hair, no voice and no batteries. When it is our turn to "Play Date" at their house, Kassidy will seek out this baby. She''ll hold it, hug it, throw it on the ground. Typical stuff, right.
Well, there was a little Birthday money left over, so I decided that maybe Kassidy would like to have a Baby of her own. Poor Bill took his girls to Toys R Us, and excused himself to the video game section, while I proceeded to contemplate the very pressing decision of which doll is the right doll to be Kassidy''s first "Baby". After at least 20 minutes of deliberation with myself (and 3 mind changes), I chose a simple bald baby with blinky eyes dressed in a pink sleeper and beanie hat, and she also came with a change of clothes, a carseat/backpack, and a magic bottle (the old kind with disappearing milk when tipped over).
Finally, I''ve made my decision, and while it''s not exactly the same as Sarah''s, it''s pretty close, they were out of that one. We pay for the doll and I''m more excited to get to the car and open this thing than anyone else. We get in the car, and I proceed to not only remove the Baby from her hermetically sealed plastic cocoon, but then I change her clothes. Bill telling me the whole time I''m ridiculous, what difference does it make what the doll is wearing. Regardless, Baby is now sporting a pair of jeans, and a cute little purple peasant top. Much like Kassidy wears.
So, finally I''m ready to hand over this new baby for the first time to Kassidy....What will she do? Hippo''s not with us, so there can''t be any pull for attention. Will she be interested or bored with this dull no bells and whistles vinyl creature (who looks strikingly similar to Miss Kassidy, bald and all)?
You would have thought I''d given a million dollars to this kid!!! When she saw that baby within her reach she got so excited, and started grinning and belly laughing like she does. I handed her Baby, and she talked to her the whole way home. And when I say talked...she looked directly into that doll''s eyes, and spoke in a soft conversational voice. It was the wildest and coolest thing I''ve ever seen her do!
Needless to say, Baby and Hippo are great friends now. Kassidy will carry both of them around, and she''ll squeeze them so tight some times, like she just could never bear to part with either of them. Positively heart wrenchingly cute.
Long Live the Dull No Bells and Whistles Baby Doll, for she is an important key to a Nurturing Woman!!!!
